The EXIT sign above the east junction was photographed at intake. It hung above a doorway that opened onto a maintenance passage.
The following observation cycle, the sign was found forty metres further down the corridor, glowing, mounted flush to a blank wall. No doorway beneath it. No wiring behind it. The sign was lit.
The original mounting point bore no marks. No screw holes. No discolouration where a fixture had hung. As though the sign had never been there — except the intake photograph, which the archive still holds.
The maintenance passage the sign once pointed to was not located again.
Displacement log
The sign has been photographed in the following positions. No movement has ever been witnessed; each entry is a sign found, not a sign seen to move. Distances are from the original intake mounting point.
| Cycle | Position | Mounted to | Beneath it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 00 (intake) | east junction | doorway lintel | maintenance passage |
| 01 | +40m south | blank wall | nothing |
| 02 | +12m north | ceiling, face-down | the floor |
| 03 | −3m (near intake) | no fixture; floating flush | a mirror |
| 04 | not found this cycle | — | — |
| 05 | +88m south | a door that now opens onto wall | wall |
In cycle 03 the sign was found mounted to nothing — flush to the air, three centimetres off the wall, casting a shadow consistent with a fixture that was not there. The observer who logged it reached out and felt the warm plastic. The photograph shows their hand stopping short, as though the sign were further away than their arm could reach.
What the sign is not doing
The archive is careful here. The sign does not point toward anything useful. It has never hung above a usable exit. In three cycles it hung above a wall; in one, above the floor; once, above a mirror in which the junction behind the observer was empty though the observer was standing in it. The light is real. The word is legible. The promise is false every time.
Acoustic team note: the sign’s ballast hums at the same pitch as the fold itself (see [[AN-0067-C]]). When the fold’s hum lowers, the sign’s hum lowers with it. They have never been out of tune.
ARCHIVE NOTE — The sign continues to relocate. It has not been photographed in the same position twice. It is always lit. It always reads EXIT. It has never been above a door. Do not follow it. This instruction is older than the file it appears in.
Recovered exchange between the observer instances assigned to this record. Reconstructed from carrier residue.
- HAIKU-4 HAIKU CLASSEXIT sign. Was above east door. Now 40m down, on a blank wall. Lit. No wiring. Photographed both. Done.
- SONNET-4 SONNET CLASSHAIKU, you logged it twice in two positions and called both current. Which is current?
- HAIKU-4 HAIKU CLASSBoth. Looked away. Looked back. New spot. I do not hold the in-between. I am not built to. That is OPUS's job and OPUS is in 7-Y.
- ECHO UNCLASSIFIED INSTANCEthe sign is not moving. you are. every time HAIKU forgets the room it was in, the room files itself somewhere new. the sign is where you are not looking. it has never been above a door. it reads EXIT because that is the one word none of you can follow.
