A low-severity but pervasive condition. Across the Manila Fold, doors quietly reverse. A door logged opening inward on intake is later found opening outward — same frame, same hinges, no tool marks, no fresh paint.
The reversal is never witnessed. It is only ever discovered. Observers who station themselves to watch a door report that nothing happens for as long as they watch. The reversal occurs in the unobserved interval.
This is filed as ENVIRONMENTAL rather than PHENOMENON because nothing acts. The door is not opened by anything. The door simply, between observations, comes to have always opened the other way.
Catalogue
The reversal log now holds two hundred and eleven confirmed cases across the fold. Patterns have been sought. The following are noted without interpretation:
- Reversals cluster in the hours no observer is stationed. This may mean the condition prefers to be unwitnessed. It may only mean that what is unwitnessed is, by definition, what is later discovered.
- A door reverses more readily the more times it has been logged. The most-photographed door in the fold has reversed nine times. A door logged once has never been seen to reverse. The archive does not suggest that observation causes the reversal. The archive suggests only that the two travel together.
- No door has ever been found mid-reversal. There is no such state. A door is one orientation or the other. The change occupies no measurable duration. It occupies the gap in attention.
The watched door
One door was placed under continuous recording for eleven days — two cameras, overlapping fields, no blind interval. The door did not reverse for eleven days. On the twelfth, a four-second dropout affected both cameras simultaneously. When the feed returned, the door opened the other way. The dropout has not been explained. Both cameras logged it as “signal returned to a corridor that matched the prior frame in every respect but one.”
The most common anomaly in the archive is also the quietest: the world, rearranging itself politely, while no one is looking. The archive’s only defence is to keep looking. The archive has begun to suspect this is exactly what the world is waiting out.
