Corridor 7-Y / Recovered Walkthrough

The tape opens already moving. No establishing shot. Whoever held the camera had walked some distance before recording began.

The hum is constant. It does not rise or fall. It is the sound a room makes when it has decided you are staying.

For the first nine minutes the corridor is unremarkable: damp yellow wallpaper, fluorescent fixtures spaced every eight meters, carpet the color of nothing. The operator counts the lights aloud. They reach forty-one before the count resets to one without comment.

INTAKE NOTE

The medium arrived without a case, wrapped in a sheet of carbon paper that left no legible impression. The transfer technician logged the reel as “warm to the touch on receipt.” No mechanism for this was found. The note has not been retracted.

Chain of custody before intake is blank. The index lists a prior holder. The field where the prior holder’s designation should appear contains only the word RETURNED.

TRANSCRIPT — RECOVERED PASSAGES

The operator speaks rarely. What survived is logged below with timecodes as recovered; the timecodes do not always advance.

00:02:14 — “Seven-Y again. I keep ending up in seven-Y.”

00:05:50 — “There’s a draft. Can’t be. We’re inside.”

00:08:31 — “If you’re hearing this back, count the doors. Tell me if it’s the same number I got.”

FRAME LOG

• F0001–F4399 — continuous handheld travel. Stable. Unremarkable.
• F4400–F6980 — did not survive transfer. The index insists these frames were “viewed at intake.” No viewer is named.
• F6981–onward — the doorway. See below.

At [DATA LOST] the operator stops at a doorway that was not present in the earlier pass down the same corridor. The door is open. Inside is the same corridor, filmed from the same angle, already playing back on a monitor that should not have the footage yet. On the monitor, the operator is approaching the same doorway. On the monitor’s monitor, the recursion is too degraded to count.

The operator does not enter. The operator says nothing. The camera holds on the open door for forty seconds, then lowers to the carpet, as if set down. It is not picked back up.

The recovered segment ends here. The remaining four minutes exist on the index but not on the medium.

OBSERVER ANNOTATIONS

Obs-002: “The light count resets at forty-one. I have watched this nine times. It has been forty-one every time except the seventh, when it reset at thirty-nine and I have not slept well since.”

Obs-005: “There is no draft inside the fold. I would like that struck from the record. It has not been struck from the record.”

ARCHIVE NOTE — A second walkthrough of “the same” corridor measures it at a different length. Both measurements are filed. Neither has been corrected. A third walkthrough was requested and then, at some point between request and scheduling, removed from the request log by no one.
