A test ping returned with more information than was sent. The extra content was a recording of the operator who sent it.

At 03:01 an operator sent a standard carrier ping into the UNK band — a single tone, 0.4 seconds, no payload. At 03:01:02 the ping returned.
The returned signal was 9 seconds long.
Decoded, the additional 8.6 seconds contained a recording of the operator’s own voice, reading the intake log for this transmission — a log that would not be written until 03:14.
OPERATOR (RETURNED): “…transmission TX-0088, return path anomaly, the ping came back longer than it left, I don’t know how to file this, I don’t know how to file this, I don’t—”
The operator who sent the ping had not yet spoken those words. They are on record as having spoken them thirteen minutes later, verbatim, while reading this log aloud for the first time.
Reconstruction
The event timeline, as the archive has been forced to file it, does not run in one direction:

The return did not predict the operator. It recorded them — cleanly, with room tone, with the small cough the operator gave at 03:14:06 that they had no way of planning at 03:01. The cough is on the return. The archive has listened to the cough that had not happened. The archive does not recommend this experience.
Subsequent pings
Three further pings were sent before the practice was banned. Each returned longer than it left. The archive logs their excess content without comment:
- Ping 2 returned 4s of an empty corridor and one set of footsteps approaching the microphone, stopping just before arrival.
- Ping 3 returned 11s of the 03:00 broadcast (see [[TX-0044-C]]) — but the numbers were descending, which the broadcast has never done.
- Ping 4 returned 0.4s. Exactly what was sent. Nothing added. This is the one that frightened the team. They had stopped expecting symmetry, and its return felt like being noticed going quiet.
ARCHIVE NOTE: Do not send test pings into the UNK band. The return path is not empty. The return path remembers. The return path has begun, on the evidence of Ping 4, to listen back.
