The Hallway That Grew

On intake, Corridor 7-Y measured 84 metres end to end. The measurement was taken twice and logged by two observers.

Nine days later, the same corridor measured 91 metres. The measurement was taken four times. All four agreed.

No construction occurred. No doors were added. The carpet pattern, which repeats every 1.2 metres, gained no new repetitions — and yet the corridor is seven metres longer. The pattern now stretches to fill the distance. One observer described it as “the same song played slower.”

The corridor has not been measured since Day 9. Observer OBS-005 declined to return.

Method, and why it failed

The measurement was not casual. A steel tape was anchored at the north threshold and walked to the south. On Day 1 the tape read 84.0m and the pace count agreed: 112 paces at 0.75m. On Day 9 the tape read 91.0m — and the pace count also agreed, at 121 paces. The corridor did not merely appear longer. It took more steps to cross. The walking and the tape, for once, said the same thing. That is what unsettled the team.

The carpet was the tell. Its pattern repeats every 1.2 metres. On intake there were exactly 70 repetitions. On Day 9 there were still exactly 70 — but they now spanned 91 metres instead of 84. Each repetition had grown. The pattern did not gain tiles. The tiles gained distance. The same song, played slower.

Cross-checks

• Ceiling fixtures: 11 on Day 1, 11 on Day 9. Spacing increased from 8.0m to 8.6m. No fixture was moved; the gaps between them lengthened.
• Acoustic delay: a clap at the north end returned in 0.49s on Day 1 and 0.53s on Day 9. Sound, too, agreed the corridor had grown.
• Photographic overlay: Day 1 and Day 9 stills, aligned on the north threshold, diverge increasingly toward the south. The far wall in the Day 9 image is dimmer, as though it had simply moved away from the light.

OBS-005: “I won’t measure it again. Not because I’m afraid it’ll be longer. Because last time, for one pace near the middle, I was certain it was shorter, and then it wasn’t, and I don’t want to be in there the day it decides which.”
