Stairwell That Only Descends

Three minutes and fifty seconds were recovered from a forty-one minute recording. The fragment is all motion: a stairwell, descending, the camera bobbing with each step.

The operator narrates only once.

“We’ve been going down for half an hour. The watch says we’ve dropped four floors. The altimeter says we haven’t moved.”

The steps are concrete, painted the same aged yellow as everything in the fold. At the edge of every landing is a number stencilled on the wall. The numbers do not decrease in order. The recovered fragment passes, in sequence: B2 · B2 · B2 · B7 · B2 · ──

INTAKE NOTE

The miniDV cassette was recovered with its record-protect tab broken off, which should make it impossible to overwrite. The recovered runtime (41:09) exceeds the maximum capacity of the tape stock by approximately eleven minutes. No splice is present. The tape is one continuous length.

WHAT THE INSTRUMENTS SAID

Two devices are audible or visible in the fragment. They do not agree.

Six hundred and twelve steps were descended. The altimeter recorded no change in elevation. The archive does not propose a reconciliation.

THE NUMBERS ON THE LANDINGS

The stencilled landing numbers were logged frame by frame. They do not form a sequence. They do not repeat on a cycle the analysts could find. One value — B7 — appears exactly once, on a landing the camera does not slow for, as though the operator did not notice it and the tape did.

Acoustic note: the operator’s footsteps are audible throughout. From roughly 02:10 onward there is a second set, slightly out of phase, arriving a half-beat after the first. The operator does not remark on them. The operator’s narration has, by then, already ended.

RECOVERED FRAGMENT — FINAL SECONDS

The last legible frames show the stairwell continuing below the bottom of the screen, as it has the entire time. There is no door. There is no floor. There is no change. The fragment does not end on an event. It simply ends, the way a held breath ends — not resolved, only stopped.

There is no footage of the bottom. The archive holds no record of any stairwell in any level that terminates. A standing request to descend 7-Y to its base has been declined by the observer network, citing case [[MP-0061-A]].
